Men's Health

Andropause refers to the symptoms men experience as their testosterone production levels decrease with age. Testosterone levels start to decline and the symptoms associated with andropause begin to manifest. Testosterone levels can also decline due to medications and lifestyle choices. Essentially, it is the technical term for the hormone imbalance all men will experience as they age. Commonly called male menopause, andropause typically begins to affect men between the ages of 35 and 40. In some cases, however, the testosterone deficiencies associated with andropause may occur in much younger men.
Whatever your age, as a man you need testosterone to maintain focus, energy, stabalize mood, build or maintain lean muscle, and to maintain sex drive. In other words, the onset of andropause can have a huge impact on not only your personal life but your professional life as well (all related to a drop in testosterone). In fact, many men, when entering andropause, say they “ don’t feel like themselves,” and their wives may attest, “they are not who they used to be.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Andropause occurs when men get older and the body stops producing adequate levels of hormone. The result is hormone imbalance. Testosterone, thyroid and DHEA levels decline. All the while, estrogen levels often increase—this is not good for a man.

The following are some but not limited to the symptoms associated with andropause:

  • Fatigue
  • Memory loss
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Lack of motivation
  • Hot flashes
  • Hair loss
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Prostate problems
  • Osteoporosis
  • Irritability

Testosterone decline is inevitable; but that doesn’t mean you have to accept it.  So long as it’s done correctly, hormone levels can be safely and effectively restored via hormone therapy. Men of any age can benefit, and results can generally be seen in 4 to 6 weeks.  Although hormone replacement will decrease symptoms and increase others; healthy diet and exercise will aid in hormone replacement success.
